Government cuts political appointees in cost-saving move

Prime Minister Rick Houenipwela

The Government has reduced the total number of political appointees by 50 percent.

Prime Minister Rick Houenipwela said the number was brought down from 60 to slightly more than 30 as part of the Government’s current administrative cost-cutting measures.

The Prime Minister said the reform is starting with his political office.

The staff reduction has affected the Caucus, the Cabinet sub-committee and other units within the Prime Minister’s office.

“The reform also includes the reduction in salary levels and benefits,” Prime Minister Houenipwela said. “Appointments are subject to review, and we believe and we expect that this reform should result in significant cost savings for the Government this year.”
