A new group has emerged following the resignation of 11 cabinet ministers and backbenchers from the Government for National Unity and Transformation yesterday.

The 11 members claimed to have joined the opposition group.

A photo of the group (possible coalition) surfaced this morning with a total number of 25 members.

SIBC News was reliably informed that other members would join the group later, which will bring the total number of members to 26.

The members include the Member of Parliament for Central Honiara, Hon. Gordon Darcy Lilo who filed a notice of a motion of no confidence against the Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele.

The motion will mature next Monday and can be moved in parliament from Tuesday, May 6th, depending on the order paper.

“There is no rule that specifies when a motion of no confidence must be moved, but sooner rather than later has been the usual practice.

“We expect it to be moved on the floor of parliament in the middle of next week,” Clerk to the National Parliament, Jefferson Hallu said.

Meanwhile the six cabinet ministers who resigned include the Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Bradley Tovosia, Minister of Finance and Treasury, Manasseh Sogavare and Minister for Infrastructure Development, Manasseh Maelanga.

Grounds for resignations according to the Government House is the lack of confidence in the current leadership of Prime Minister Manele.

A new government could emerge once the motion of no confidence that was put in notice was passed in parliament.

Parliament sitting this morning has been adjourned for Tuesday 6 May 2025.
