5 to contest Tandai Ward By-Election

The nomination period for Guadalcanal’s’ Tandai Ward Provincial Assembly by-election closed at 4 PM this afternoon.

Returning Officer, Joseph Sua told SIBC News that five candidates consisting of four males and a female have been nominated .

The contesting candidates are Mr. Universe Panda, Mr. Mato Mui, Mr. Desmond Iro, Mr. Henry Maenu, and Ms. Melinda Kii.

Mr. Sua said that a candidate wishing to withdraw his or her nomination must do so in writing to the Returning Officer within 48 hours after the close of nominations.

He adds that following the 48-hour withdrawal period, another procedural step after the close of nominations is a ballot paper draw, as stipulated in Section 74 of the Electoral Act 2018.

“A ballot paper draw is conducted by Returning Officers to determine a candidate’s position on the ballot paper for each constituency. The ballot paper draws will be conducted within five days after the close of nominations,” Mr. Sua said.

The appointed polling day for the Tandai Ward provincial assembly by-election is on November 13, 2024.

The seat remains vacant following the passing of its provincial representative earlier this year.
