7th Pacific Media Summit officially opens in Niue
The 7th Pacific Media Summit was officially opened at the village of Avatele -Liolau Grounds in Niue this evening.
The summit is hosted by the Niue Media Association in collaboration with the Government of Niue, and the Pacific Islands News Association ( PINA) under the theme, “Charting a Resilient Future: Pacific Media Navigating Press Freedoms, AI and Geopolitical interests.”
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Niue’s Prime Minister, Hon. Dalton Tagelagi acknowledged delegates for making the effort to attend the summit.
He also acknowledged PINA for seeing it fit for Niue to host the event.
“I thank you for being here. Many times, small islands like Niue are neglected from hosting some of the meetings within the region.”
“And this is something that I’ve always advocated for as part of the resolution that we’ve always talked about, that everyone should be included and I thank you for choosing to be here,” he said.
More than 70 journalists and media practitioners across the Pacific are attending the summit.
Pre-summit workshops have been conducted with more discussions expected to be carried out in the next few days.
Discussions will be based on focal areas such as Media resilience, AI disruptions, Press Freedom and Geopolitical interests.
Meanwhile, PINA President, Kora Nou also acknowledged the government and people of Niue for hosting the event.
“Thank you for warmly welcoming us this week. I wish that our visiting colleagues and partners have a successful summit and I urge all of you to also find some time to enjoy the scenic beauty and hospitality of the rock of the pacific.”
Solomon Islands is represented at the summit by representatives from the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation ( SIBC), SBM Online, Tavuli News, Island Sun News and Sunday Isles.
The summit will conclude on Friday.
