Speaker of Parliament Sir Allan Kemakeza has shown interest in a Commonwealth workshop on Parliamentary privilege and Transparency of Parliament.

Clerk to Parliament Taeasi Sanga told SIBC News, the Speaker indicated his interest in the workshop when he registered to attend the 22nd Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth in Wellington, New Zealand.

Mrs. Sanga says Sir Allan’s interest to attend the workshop on that subject is good, as the country started drafting a guide book on Parliamentary privileges for Solomon Islands MPs.

“The purpose of the guide book is to provide our members and others to identify the privileges, immunities and powers of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands. So Speaker indicating in his registration that he wants to attend this is something that he wants to also, because this is what we’re working toward for our parliament as well”, she said.

The Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Officers Conference begins on Tuesday.

SIBC News understands Speaker of Parliament Sir Allan Kemakeza, his wife and Clerk to Parliament, Taeasi Sanga were scheduled to leave Honiara for Wellington yesterday.
