Kids take over SIBC for Universal Children’s Day

Children from schools around Honiara will take over key roles in the SIBC studio to voice their support for thousands of their peers who are unschooled, unprotected and uprooted.

UNICEF and SIBC are partnering to celebrate Universal Children’s Day with six children hosting and co-hosting radio programmes on SIBC all day tomorrow.

The broadcast takeover is meant to give children the opportunity to raise their voices on issues affecting them and gain appreciation as a group that has the potential to contribute to the development of the country.

The six children will read news bulletins and co-host current affairs, entertainment and educational programs during the day, including the extra class programmes.

This activity is part of the weeklong celebration of Universal Children’s Day in Honiara, which commenced on Universal Children’s Day on Monday, November 20 and will end on Friday, November 24.

Children from other Pacific Island countries also took over broadcast airwaves through similar programmes during Universal Children’s Day.

And UNICEF is encouraging children across the region to speak out about issues affecting them through social media as well.

The latest data shows that 385 million children live in extreme poverty around the world, and 264 million children and youth are out of school.
