The former financial controller for the Ministry of Police and Correctional Services Stephen Otto, will spend the next three years in prison.

Principal Magistrate Fatimah Taeburi delivered the ruling today.

Mr Otto pleaded guilty to 11 counts of conversion charges which he committed between 2015 and 2016.

He acquired more than $800 thousand dollars of public funds when he was the Financial Controller and a member of the Ministry of Police and Correctional Services’ tender board.

Magistrate Taeburi initially ordered that he should serve six years jail term.

She then considered the totality of the sentence and thought it was excessive in the circumstances.

She therefore imposed a sentence of three years, backdated to the day the accused was first taken into custody.

Mr Otto has the right to appeal the sentence within 14 days.
