Guadalcanal teens shocked Firisua
The two Guadalcanal female teen athletes have shocked the famous regional and national long distance gold medalist runner Sharon Firisua.
In two seperate events, 800m and 3000m race, 12 years old Purity Fakafu of Vaturanga St Francis Anglican Primary school , and 14 years old Rose Pita of Longu Kaoka secondary school have respectively embarrased Ms Firisua.
Young Fakafu, a grade five student who is turning 13 next Monday said her victory was her pre-birthday present.
Ms Rose Pita also snatched anotger gold medal on the 1500m event.
This is foollowing a National Athletics Championship held at Vaturanga Secondary School, West Guadalcanal, Friday.
Meanwhile, a new comer David Walasi, of Selwyn College scooped a gold medal in men’s 100 meters sprint, timed at 11.10 seconds.
This new record gaps the national sprinter, Paul Ma’unikeni who recorded a time of 11.29 seconds, followed by another Selwyn College student Arthur Okai who took the third place with 11.34 seconds.
In the women’s sprint event, Jovita Ambrose of Honiara City snatched a gold medal followed by her city teammate Sama Mamae, followed by Central Islander, Kathy Gitoa.
Ms. Firisua said, she was happy to see young female athletes coming up and was willing to supoort them in preparation towards the 2023 Pacific Games.
SIBC News understands, Ms Firisua’s long distance events were from 5000 meters and above.
The National Athletics Championship brings together athletes from Honiara, Guadalcanal, Central, Malaita and Isabel provinces.
