Solomon Islands is on its path to replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy.

A government statement today reports Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo as saying this at the 21 Oceania Leaders Summit in New Caledonia.

Prime Minister Lilo says his government has now examined hydro power, geothermal energy and other sources of energy as potential areas of renewable energy for the country.

He says the Tina River hydro project on Guadalcanal, now out to market for bidders is an example.

Mr Lilo adds when the project is completed in 2017, it is expected to supply more than half of the current electricity requirement for Honiara City.

SIBC News understands Prime Minister Lilo also says several other similar projects are now in the pipeline.
