Lifesaving AEDs for Emergency Department

The National Referral Hospital Emergency Department has received two Automated External Defibrillators on Wednesday from the National Olympic Committee of the Solomon Islands (NOCSI) Medical Commission in partnership with the Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) Medical Commission.

Representing NOCSI Medical Commission, Dr Jack Puti said the purchase of the equipment was made possible through ONOC Medical Commission through the Olympic Solidarity Fund.

He said he is happy to handover the two lifesaving devices the National Referral Hospital Emergency Department.

“I hope that that the devices will be used when it is needed the most,” Dr Jack Puti said.

Head of Emergency Department of the National Referral Hospital, Dr Trina Sale, thanked ONOC and NOCSI pointing out they will ensure these are available in different areas in the Emergency Department.

“Early defibrillation is important in resuscitation and for survival. Additionally, when we conduct outreach trainings, we will take the AEDs to train other health professionals on their use,” Dr Sale pointed out.

Meanwhile, Medical Superintendent at the National Referral Hospital, Janelle Solomon said having the devices with the NRH emergency department is a bonus as they have a scheduled training timetable on lifesaving skills for health workers in all provinces including NRH and Honiara City Council Clinics.

Dr Janella also pointed out that trainings on the lifesaving devices should not only for medical workers but also for people working in different sectors in the country.

“So, we started with health workers and will subsequently train others,” Dr Janella said.

It is understood that two Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) was also donated to Burns Creek Clinic in December last year.
