The Papua New Guinea (PNG)- Solomon Islands community in Honiara celebrated their 49th Independence Anniversary at the Golf Club yesterday.

The celebration marks 49 years since PNG became a sovereign state.

The event was attended by family, friends and supporters of the PNG community, arrayed in their flag colors.

Speaking at the event, Papua New Guinea High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, His Excellency Moses Keul said the celebration is a special occasion for the PNG community in the country.

” Celebrating Independence away from our motherland is a unique experience. And I take pride as I look around, I see the beautiful colors of our flag. Today marks the momentous day when we attained political Independence by lowering our flag from our colonial powers.”

“ Today we stand together proudly to celebrate independence as one people and for that reason and above all, we stand to thank God the creator for his sufficient grace.”

His Excellency Keul also reminded attendees to be good ambassadors for their country by having a sense of purpose in life.

” There is no room for complacency my friends, self centeredness or greed. We must be respectful, treat everyone as equal with dignity and pride.”

“We must rise up and build our nation as echoed by our national anthem,” he said.

Papua New Guinea gained political Independence on 16th September  1975.

SIBC News understands, an official Flag Raising ceremony was also held at the PNG Chancery in Honiara this morning to mark the occasion.
