The National Parliament today elected Hon. Cathy Nori as Deputy Speaker, making her the first female to hold the position in Solomon Islands history.

Being the only candidate nominated for the office of Deputy Speaker, the Member of Parliament for Maringe Kokota constituency stands unopposed.

Hon. Nori was nominated by the Member of Parliament for East Guadalcanal, Hon. Bradley Tovosia, Member of Parliament for East Malaita, Hon. Manasseh Maelanga, and Member of Parliament for Ranongga/Simbo, Hon. Wayne Ghemu.

Speaking during the appointment, Hon. Nori thanked all the members of Parliament for electing her to take up the Deputy Speakers role.

“I rise to thank you for giving the Member of Parliament for Maringe Kokota constituency and now Deputy Speaker the opportunity to express my thanks and gratitude for appointing me to this very high office. I am really humbled to be appointed.”

“I pledge to do my best and fulfill this duty to the best of my ability. I thank you all for your confidence in me and nominating me to this position,” she said.

SIBC News understands, the Deputy Speaker’s post became vacant following the appointment of the former holder, the Hon. Francis Sade, who is now the Minister for Public Service.
