CAUSE II project to rehabilitate key bridges and drainage in Honiara
The Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement (CAUSE II) Project has pre-identified critical bridges and road drainage systems within Honiara City slated for rehabilitation.
Construction work is anticipated to commence in the third quarter of this year.
Recent heavy rainfall and increased traffic have compromised the structural integrity of these bridges, posing significant safety risks for users.
This rehabilitation will involve the replacement with new structures that adhere to safety standards, ensuring a safer environment for all commuters.
Honiara City’s Road drainage system has faced considerable challenges, exacerbated by improper waste disposal practices by some residents, which often lead to clogged drainage channels.
CAUSE II will help address these by replacing outdated drainage pipes and trenches, as well as improving the overall drainage system.
These enhancements will effectively manage rainwater runoff, significantly reducing the risk of flooding on roads and minimising sediment build-up.
Other subprojects outlined for Honiara include road rehabilitation and public space improvement.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) continues to provide oversight for this World Bank and Australian government-funded projects’ rollout phase, strengthening its commitment towards generating employment, improving urban infrastructure, and enhancing climate resilience for the country’s rapidly growing urban centres.
