A lot of people might say climate change is only affecting people in the small low-lying atoll islands, but for people of Karumulun community in West Russell, effects of climate change is evident.

In a recent interview with SIBC News a Sandra Teria explained changes are happening with their food crops.

“This place used to provide us with food before, but now crops planted cannot yield food, potatoes are unable to grow. Now we survive only on cassava and banana the only two crops that suits the island.”

She adds, water is also a major problem in their community.

“In terms of water for bathing we ususally take water from wells and they are fresh, but now salt water has also contaminated our wells. These are some of the changes we are experiencing on the island at the moment.”
