Prime Minister Hon Jeremiah Manele will not attend the upcoming 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2024) due to domestic pressing issues.

Hon Manele in a media conference last week announced the Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade Hon Peter Shanel Agovaka will attend on his behalf and represent Solomon Islands at CHOGM 2024.

My non-attendance is due to few domestic matters that I need to attend to including preparations for parliament the budget process, of course that takes precedent when you have domestic matters that are of critical importance that takes precedent over overseas trips.”

Prime Minister Manele said despite his non-attendance Solomon Islands still values the importance of CHOGM 2024 especially as the international event for first time will be hosted by a pacific island country.

CHOGM 2024 is important I have every confidence that the minister of foreign affairs will represent Solomon Islands well in that meeting, I’ll be writing to my colleague the Prime Minister of Samoa who is the host to explain why I’m not attending and to wish her well in hosting CHOGM,” he said.

The 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting will be held in Samoa, Apia from 25th to 26th October 2024.
