Guadalcanal Celebrates 40th Second Appointed Day

The Guadalcanal Provincial Government (GPG) hosted a ceremony to mark Guadalcanal’s 40th Second Appointed Day at the DC Park yesterday.

The event saw the attendance of the Prime Minister, Hon. Jeremiah Manele as the guest of honour including government officials and the public.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Manele congratulated the province on its 40th second appointed day. He acknowledged the province for its contributions to the country.

” I thank the people of Guadalcanal Province for hosting major investments such as GPPOL, Gold Ridge, Tina Hydro, but most importantly Honiara city.”

Manele highlighted that the increasing population in Honiara is an issue that needs to be dealt with.

” The increase in Honiara’s population has put a lot of pressure on Guadalcanal because of people coming to Honiara in search of jobs and economic opportunities.

” Guadalcanal, Honiara City and the national government must seriously look into this issue and find ways to address it,” he said.

The Prime Minister then called on the province and its people to continue working together with the national government to improve livelihood within the province and the country.

Meanwhile, Guadalcanal Premier, Hon. Willie Atu highlighted that the celebration provides an opportunity to reflect on past experiences.

” This annual occasion provides as the opportunity to reflect on past experiences, present happenings, and map new directions for the future of our beloved province.

” For Guadalcanal province, the past 40 years was marked with many achievements as well as challenges. For this reason I would like to thank God for his leading and providence for the people of Guadalcanal,” Premier Atu said.

The celebration also coincided with the launching of the Government for Good Governance Policy document.

SIBC News understands, the Second Appointed Day marks the establishment of Guadalcanal as a Province on August 1st 1984 .
