Infant baby found at Ranadi dumpsite, police condemns such action
Police are investigating an infanticide incident of an infant baby girl whose body was discovered dead at the Randi dumpsite on 10 August 2024.
According to the initial report, the infant was initially discovered inside a rubbish bin collected from a community in the East Honiara rubbish site area.
It was reported that during the process of examining the waste deposited by the Honiara City, Council’s skipping truck, the infant was discovered wrapped in clothes, enclosed with a plastic bag inside an empty case.
Deputy Commissioner for National Operation Juanita Matanga said police have observed a recent increase in infanticide incidents, which are believed to be related to teenage pregnancy and societal changes.
“We must support one another and work together to prevent the abandonment of infants.”
“This report highlighted ongoing incidents where infants have been abandoned.”
“The act of aborting and then discarding infants is not only a criminal offense but also an inhumane act.”
“This inhumane act needs serious attention and action to be taken to stop such practices from happening,” Matanga said.
The police are calling on relevant authorities, communities, and parents to work together to assist young women who may find themselves in a difficult situation to seek help and support in order to prevent such inhumane actions.
“Let’s remain vigilant and provide the support and protection our children need to thrive. Our responsibility is important in creating a safe and nurturing environment for every child,” Matanga said.
She added it is the paramount duty of parents to look after our young children, especially our daughters, to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring.
Safeguarding their well-being is essential to ensuring their safety and future.
