A workshop which aimed at helping people to recognise the importance of their language ended last Friday in Belaha, Central Guadalcanal.

A statement from the Solomon Islands Translation Advisory Group, SITAG, states an average of twenty community members participated in the word-gathering exercise.

The statement says the participants collected over 4-thousand 700 words in their language adding, these words will be entered into a computer and will eventually form a dictionary of the language.

Participants however enjoyed the chance to discuss their language, and now recognise that it is important to develop their language in written form so that it will not be lost in the coming generations.

The workshop titled, ‘The Malango language dictionary development workshop,’ was organized by SITAG as part of a language development and Bible translation work for the communities of Central Guadalcanal.

SIBC News understands the dictionary will be used in schools, homes and in Bible translation work in the future.
