The Lake Tengano World Heritage Site Association is calling on the new government to give urgent attention to the status of Lake Tengano, East of the Rennell Islands.

Secretary to the Association George Tauika told SIBC News today the lake’s status is very important as far as conservation is concerned.

He says currently the lake is under immense threats from logging and prospecting for mining activities within the lake’s vicinity.

While he congratulates the new Democratic Coalition for Change Government on behalf of their people, Mr. Tauika says the new Minister for Environment should consider reviewing the surface access agreements concerning mining activities on Rennell island.

He says the environmental impacts posed by logging and mining activities on the island are a real concern to them, more especially the status of the lake.

SIBC News understands the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology is looking after the lake’s World Heritage status as provided for under the National Protected Areas Act of 2010.
