The Acting Prime Minister has rejected allegations the Malaita Ma’asina Forum made against the newly appointed Police Commissioner, saying there is no standing court case for Frank Prendergast in Australia.

In a statement today, Manasseh Maelanga said there is no standing case in Australia’s Federal Court involving Mr Prendergast in relation to the Christmas Island riot, as was alleged by the Malaita Ma’asina Forum.

The Acting Prime Minister also said Prendergast’s appointment was made according to a rigorous and independent procedure – similar to all other appointments made under the Constitution.

In response to allegations that Prendergast’s appointment was a result of outside influence, Mr Maelanga said Prendergast’s professional experience and qualifications made him suitable for the role and he was appointed by merit.

He also said there is no need to further discuss the issue raised against the newly appointed Commissioner of Police.

Meanwhile, the Acting Prime Minister says the Government looks forward to Mr Prendergast taking up his important appointment.

Manasseh Maelanga also called on citizens to cooperate with Mr Prendergast as he takes charge of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force.
