Patovaki Clarifies Stance on Demolition of Illegal Betel Nut Vendors
By Alfred Pagepitu
The Honiara City Council (HCC) Deputy City Clerk, Jefferson Patovaki has clarified concerns regarding the ongoing demolition of illegal markets within the city.
Patovaki stated that the actions are part of their efforts to maintain order and legality within Honiara, and to ensure the city remains clean and safe for all residents.
The recent operation saw the demolition of Betelnut markets at Mamana Water, Fijian Quarter, and Whiteriver 01 bus stop, which has generated reactions from vendors and stall owners.
Patovaki stated that these areas have posed a risk to public health and safety, as it has become unsanitary and could attract criminal activities.
He explained that under the Betel Nut Free Zones Ordinance 2023 which was passed last year, the selling of betel nuts is restricted within certain areas of the city.
These includes the Mendana Avenue, Hibiscus Avenue, Kukum Highway, Prince Phillip Highway, markets established under the Honiara City Council Market Ordinance, any facility or venue accessed or used for sporting activities by the general public, any school or organization operating under the Honiara City Council, and any other areas the council approves.
” The council has already conducted awareness campaigns on these ordinances, and most vendors are aware of them, including the Litter Ordinance and Market Ordinance.”
” The council’s actions are not intended to disadvantage the people of Honiara, but rather to regulate the selling of betel nuts within the city boundaries, as per the existing laws and ordinances. The council has already provided venues, such as the Gegema market, for betel nut vendors to sell their products,” Patovaki said.
Meanwhile, Patovaki stated that the law enforcement division’s ongoing operations signal a firm approach to urban governance, highlighting the importance of adherence to city regulations.
Additional demolitions are expected as the HCC intensifies its efforts to clean up the city and promote a healthier, safer community.
Patovaki also encourages vendors to work closely with the HCC to address the illegal selling of betel nuts in the city.
