PM acknowledged the Gold Coast Council and sports facilities for supporting Solomon Islands Sports development

Prime Minister Hon. Manasseh Sogavare MP yesterday visited Australia’s Gold Coast Mayor’s Office and conveyed the Solomon Islands Government’s ‘gratitude’ for Gold Coast’s support in sports development, through Solomon Islands National Institute of Sports, SINIS.

Addressing the Gold Coast Deputy Mayor, Cr. Donna Gates, Prime Minister Sogavare hopes to further expand current partnership in the form of an MOU for greater exposure for Solomon Islands athletes.

The Prime Minister emphasized, “this will strengthen the partnership between the Gold Coast Performance Centre and the Solomon Islands National Institution of Sports on High Performance Camps and events for our National Teams, along with staff mentoring program to enhance our facility management and operations capabilities.”

The Prime Minister also appreciated the hospitality by the Gold Coast Performance Centre offered to hundreds of athletes that have previously trained with the Centre.

Prime Minister Sogavare adds, “thanks also to Bond University for their partnership in staff mentoring program with SINIS, along with the student international placement that has seen SINIS host some of their students in Sport & Exercise Science and Physiotherapy.”

He articulated, Gold Coast is a city of choice for Solomon Islands when it comes to offshore High-Performance programs because of its world class facilities.

He told Deputy Mayor Donna, this relationship provides Solomon Islands with a tremendous foundation as the nation looks beyond the 2023 Pacific Games and focus on the legacy planning of the facilities.

Gold Coast has built a strong legacy from hosting the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games through the building of sustainable facilities, supported by capacity building programs for its workforce in the sport industry.

It also pride itself in supporting the sport objectives of Pacific Nations, specifically in High Performance camps and events.

Prime Minister Sogavare and his entourage which include the Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Jeremiah Manele, Minister of Finance and Treasury, Hon. Harry Kuma and senior government officials also visited Bond University, Gold Coast Performance Centre, Gold Coast Sport & Leisure Centre, Gold Coast Aquatic Centre and the Pimpama Sports Hub.

The Prime Minister’s delegation will fly out of Brisbane today to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia via Dubai, the Solomon Islands government’s first official visit to Saudi Arabia.
