An investigation is underway following the suspected suicide of a man, believed to be between 25 and 30 years old, who set his home while he is inside in Auki on Tuesday.
The incident occurred after the man had a heated argument with his aunt over financial issues.
Malaita Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Tex Tafoa told SIBC News that the person instructed young boys to purchase petrol, without revealing his intentions for its use.
“He received two gallons (10 liters) of pure petrol and began pouring it outside of his front door.”
“Despite efforts to talk him out of it, he ultimately ignited the fuel using a piece of plastic,” PPC Tafoa explained.
Witnesses described a scene of chaos as the fire spread. Fortunately, police officers noticed smoke and quickly alerted emergency services.
“We called for water and fire officers to secure the area. It was fortunate that we managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings, PPC Tafoa said.
Local volunteers have stepped in to assist those affected, helping recover valuable belongings from the damaged home.
Thorough inquiry is underway to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
PPC Tafoa emphasized that although the cause of death appears clear, the investigation will continue to ensure all aspects are fully explored.
