Pope Francis Appoints Most Rev. Peter Houhou as the New Bishop of Gizo Diocese in the Solomon Islands
The Apostolic Nunciature in Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands is pleased to announce that His Holiness, Pope Francis, has accepted the resignation of H.E. Most Rev. Luciano Capelli, SDB, from the government of the Diocese of Gizo in the Solomon Islands.
Pope Francis has appointed H.E. Most Rev. Peter Houhou, the current Bishop of the Diocese of Auki, as his successor to the See of Gizo.
The appointment was officially announced lastweek, Friday, June 16, 2023, at 12:00 noon in the Vatican, corresponding to 9:00 PM in Papua New Guinea and 10:00 PM in the Solomon Islands.
This significant announcement marks a transition in leadership for the Catholic community in the Diocese of Gizo.
Most Rev. Peter Houhou, born on October 10, 1966, in Marau, Guadalcanal, is 56 years old. His journey in service to the Church began when he entered the seminary and completed his studies in philosophy and theology at the Holy Spirit Major Seminary in Bomana, Papua New Guinea.
On July 3, 1999, he was ordained as a priest and was incardinated in the Archdiocese of Honiara.
Throughout his priestly ministry, Bishop Peter Houhou has served in various capacities, demonstrating his dedication and commitment to the Catholic Church and its faithful:
– July 1999 to April 2000: Assistant Parish Priest of Ruavatu Parish, Honiara
– April 2000 to May 2006: Parish Priest – Makina Parish in Marau, Honiara
– May 2006 to February 2015: Parish Priest – Visale Parish, Honiara
– May 2011 to 2018: Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Honiara
– February 1, 2015, to 2018: Administrator of Holy Cross Cathedral, Honiara
In recognition of his exceptional leadership and dedication, Bishop Peter Houhou was appointed as the Bishop of Auki on July 3, 2018, and was subsequently ordained as a bishop on October 14, 2018. Now, on June 16, 2023, His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed him as the Bishop of Gizo, entrusting him with the pastoral care of the diocese.
