The cost of reagents overseas are often quite expensive for the National Referral Hospital (NRH), says National Laboratory Director Alfred Dofai.

He stated at the recent hearing into the 2009 Report of the Parliamentary Special Select Committee Inquiry into the Quality of Medical Services provided at the National Referral Hospital.

Mr Dofai adds, there is need for a separate laboratory from the current clinical lab at NRH to address any immediate disease outbreaks in the future.

The Lab Director thanked the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and other stakeholders who helped in this area.

He also thanked the Ministry of Health and Medical Services for endorsing plans to build a separate lab from the current clinical laboratory.
