Specific maintenance works for unsealed roads in West Honiara commences

Specific maintenance road works on unsealed roads in West Honiara commenced last week, following the awarding of contracts to these local civil contractors.

After a comprehensive briefing and finalisation of formalities, these contractors mobilised their workforce and machinery to the designated road sections.

Again, West Honiara has been categorised into sealed and unsealed lots funded under the Solomon Islands Government Economic Infrastructure Program (EIP).

For unsealed lots, there were four contractors for a duration of 6 months as specified in the table below:

Lot Number Detail of the route maintenance Contractor
1 Mbokona, Mbuburu 1 and 2, Vasakena, Tolu Avenue roads AP & S Construction
2 Lepping Road, Mosquito Valley, Independence Road, Australian High Commissioner’s Road, Epalle school Road, Tavio ridge, Tingge Ridge road.

Naya Construction Limited

3 Fifi Road, Ngossi Valley road, Tasahe Drive, Tasahe B, Agape Road

Faith Company Limited (FCL)

4 Independence Valley, Wind Valley, Namoruka road Trades Transformation Company (TTC)

Progress of these roadworks is highly dependent on favourable weather conditions, as heavy rains pose ongoing challenges.

“We are committed to closely supervising these projects, ensuring compliance with safety standards, quality control, and adherence to contract specifications,” the Transport Infrastructure Management team of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) stated.

For the initial phase, these contractors will do patrol grading, vegetation clearance, drainage clean-up and road alignment identification.

The next phase involves re-gravelling using approved base materials and compaction.

In addition, MID’s Safeguards team is actively engaged along these routes to collect data and raise community awareness on critical issues, including road encroachment assessment, the removal of derelict vehicles obstructing traffic and relocating roadside betel nut markets that affect the drainage system. Overall, the focus is on enhancing road safety for all users.

Also, the Community Access Urban Services Enhancement (CAUSE II) project will augment the government with specific road maintenance for West Honiara using Double Bituminous Surface Treatment (DBST) and concrete methods: Tasahe – Ngossi Valley Road, Ngossi Valley-White River Road, Tsilm Street, Hibiscus Avenue, Lengakiki Road, and Rewa Road. Work is anticipated to commence early next year.

In the meantime, the ongoing Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP) for the Tandai Highway in West Honiara, stretching from the Townground Roundabout to White River, is set to begin asphalt laying soon, with the completion of the overall road section anticipated by December.

These vital road maintenance activities are a welcome relief for members of the west side community and local businesses alike.

We sincerely appreciate the community’s patience and support as we undertake these essential improvements.
