Vanuatu-Honiara Community celebrates Independence Day

By Alex Dadamu

The Vanuatu community in Honiara celebrated Vanuatu’s 44th Independence Anniversary today at the National Auditorium.

The colorful and lively event brought together ni-Vanuatuans in the country, along with friends and supporters.

Vanuatu-Solomon Committee (VanSol) Vice Chairman Rocky Tuku told SIBC News that the event was organized to remind young ni-Vanuatuans of their country’s history.

Tuku urged Vanuatu students to uphold the values shared by their elders.

“Continue to strive with the values and lessons shared by our elders. Custom, culture, church, and government are the main areas that lays the foundation of Vanuatu’s independence. Let these teachings guide the country forward as we move beyond 44 years of independence,” Mr. Tuku said.

It is understood that formerly known as the New Hebrides before independence, Vanuatu gained its independence on July 30, 1980, under former Prime Minister Walter Linis’ leadership.
